Movement and Change of Colour by Magnetism
Movement and Change of Colour by Magnetism is a two-person project exploring how black-and-white tones can shift through magnetic force. Taking Muxi’s (牧谿) Returning Sails on a Distant Shore (《遠浦帰帆図》) as a reference, we looked at how the gradients and movement of ink painting could be recreated with different materials.
By mixing iron sand with white pigment and oil, we created a surface that reacted to a magnet’s movement. The iron particles gathered, dispersed, and stretched in response, forming subtle changes in tone and texture. Larger magnets produced broader, fluid motions, while smaller ones created sharper directional flows.
The project reinterprets the dynamics of ink painting through physical motion, revealing how monochrome can transform when guided by an unseen force.
